Driving through Slovakia? This updated 2025 guide covers all toll fees, vignette types, route coverage, and common mistakes to avoid fines
If you are planning to travel by car on Slovakia’s motorways and expressways, it is important to know which tolls and fees may apply. To legally use these roads, drivers must purchase the appropriate vignette or toll permit. Because the rules and costs are not the same for every vehicle, we have prepared a clear overview of how the Slovak toll system works in 2025. One common question is whether the words “vignette” and “toll” mean the same thing. In this guide, we explain the difference, outline who needs to pay, and provide all the essential details you need for a smooth and stress-free journey on Slovak roads. In this article, you’ll find answers to:
Is there a difference between the e-vignette and the toll?
Which vehicles must pay motorway fees in Slovakia?
How does the digital toll system work?
What are the current costs of the vignette and toll in 2025?
Where can you buy the vignette or register for toll payment?
Slovakia has operated a fully digital toll system for several years, meaning the old paper stickers are no longer in use. How you pay depends entirely on the type of vehicle you are driving.
For most passenger cars, the requirement is an e-vignette for Slovakia, which gives drivers the right to use the motorways and expressways for a fixed period of time. Heavier vehicles, however, fall under the route toll system. Unlike the vignette, the route toll is distance-based, with fees calculated according to the kilometres driven on certain sections of road.
The e-vignette in Slovakia applies to passenger cars, trailers, and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes. Depending on how long
you plan to stay, you can choose from several validity periods.
Since 1 August 2024, Slovakia also offers a 1-day electronic vignette, valid until midnight of the selected day. This
was introduced to provide more flexibility for short-term visitors and transit traffic.
Here’s the current range of options:
1-day vignette
valid until 24:00 on the chosen date (introduced 1 August 2024)10-day vignette
ideal for short trips or vacations30-day vignette
for longer stays or frequent travel within one month365-day vignette
the annual option, valid for 365 days from the selected start dateVehicles over 3.5 tonnes fall under the route toll system instead, while motorcycles remain fully exempt from toll payments
All rules and prices are based on official information from the Slovak Ministry of Transport and the national toll operator SkyToll.
Not every driver in Slovakia has to pay a toll. Whether you are required to pay depends mainly on the total weight of your vehicle. All vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 3.5 tonnes fall into the category that must use the distance-based route toll system. This applies primarily to trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles. There are a few exceptions to this rule, which we’ll explain in the following sections — for example, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes have different regulations.
Tolls apply mainly to the country’s motorways and expressways, but also to some first-class federal roads. The main toll roads include:
Motorways
D1, D2, D3, D4Expressways
R1, R2, R6First-class federal roads
51 and 75When planning your journey, check your route in advance, as not every road in Slovakia requires a toll, but most major transit corridors do
For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, Slovakia uses a digital, distance-based toll system called “Myto” instead of vignettes. To use this system, drivers must install an on-board unit (OBU), which is provided and managed by the company SkyToll a.s. The OBU is a small electronic device that attaches to the inside of your windscreen. It communicates with toll checkpoints and border crossings using a combination of technologies, including GPS, GSM/GPRS, and microwave DSRC. This allows the system to track how far the vehicle has travelled on motorways in Slovakia and calculate the exact fee.
When using an OBU, the driver is responsible for:
To obtain an OBU, the vehicle owner must register with SkyToll and sign a service contract. Registration can be completed at customer service centres or via courier delivery, and requires vehicle documents for verification. Once installed, the OBU replaces the need for a physical sticker. After setup, the device automatically tracks road usage and provides the basis for the final toll calculation.
In Slovakia, tolls for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are calculated on a per-kilometre basis. The exact rate depends on four key factors:
Type of road
motorways, expressways, or selected first-class federal roads
Vehicle category
different rates apply for trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles
Emission class
cleaner Euro standards (Euro 5 or Euro 6) pay less than older vehicles
Number of axles
heavier vehicles with more axles are charged moreFor example: A Euro 6 truck with two axles on the D1 motorway pays around €0.10 per kilometre, while older, less efficient trucks can pay noticeably more.
Because rates can change, drivers are strongly advised to check the official SkyToll toll calculator before their trip.
Paying for Slovakia’s road system depends on whether you need an e-vignette (for cars and lighter motorhomes) or the distance-based toll (for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes).
You can buy an e-vignette in several ways:
Since the price is fixed (1-day, 10-day, monthly, or yearly), you know exactly what you’ll pay when you buy it.
Heavy vehicles require an on-board unit (OBU). To obtain one, you need to:
Once installed, the OBU automatically records your journeys and calculates the toll.
